Do you compete in HTM? Are you struggling with Musical Interpretation? Or maybe the 'flow' of 'Content and Flow', well... isn't! Maybe you're going with a general style but not sure what else to do? Or perhaps you've latched onto a few words but it's just not quite working. Do you want to tell a story? Or maybe you want to be able to get to grips with the beat of the music. Or maybe, Christina has been a judge and nagged you about not changing what you're doing half way through a musical phrase (sorry!) and you're left thinking 'what on earth is a musical phrase anyway?!" Or perhaps you've not even started in HTM (Heelwork-to-Music / Canine Freestyle / Dancing with Dogs) and you've enjoyed teaching your dog a few tricks but are not too sure what to do next... If you answered 'yes' to any of the above this is the workshop for you - and we really, really want to help you!

This workshop is taught by Lucy Creek (10 times HTM Crufts Champion) & Christina Oxtoby (Crufts finalist for several years.) Lucy and Christina represent completely different approaches to choreography but over the years have come to recognise the importance of combining the two methods. Lucy is one of the most innovative 'thinking outside the box' people in HTM, and specialises in thinking of themes and story telling. Christina's background is in music (she has a music degree) and enjoys listening to the phrases and nuances of the music whilst adding in dance elements. As well as them both being HTM Crufts competitors and members of British International HTM teams they are also both advanced HTM judges.

They have wide experience of working with a variety of different breeds including – Border Collies, Beagles, Great Danes, Hungarian Wirehaired Vizsla, Basset Hound, German Shepherd and Papillion / Chihuahua (plus the many other dogs and owners that they have coached.) They understand that different dogs need completely different choreography including the need to add elements to perk up some dogs and calm down others!

The day will include -

  • Story telling and the 'big idea' - Lucy
  • Musical beats, themes and phrases – Christina
  • Keeping the flow between ‘moves' – Lucy and Christina
  • Creative ways to make moves tell stories – Lucy
  • Costumes, the good the bad and the ugly! - Lucy and Christina
  • Props, when and when not to bring the kitchen sink! - Lucy and Christina
  • Your posture and movement (don't panic – not dance!) - Christina
  • Writing out your routine – Lucy and Christina
  • Music editing – Lucy (ideas for additions of music) and Christina (how to musically make it make sense - plus 'An idiot's guide to easily chopping up a standard pop song!')
  • Different breeds, different dogs, different ideas – Lucy and Christina
  • Special considerations for heelwork (music, theme and movement) – Lucy and Christina
  • Learning from videos – Lucy and Christina
  • (Time allowing) Help and ideas with your own routine – small group discussions with input from Lucy and Christina (please bring your music on your phone or tablet if you can)

- Can I bring my dog? You won't be working with your dog (Lucy and Christina will bring some of their dogs as demos) so if you can leave them at home please do. If you have to bring them with you please make sure that they will be happy to quietly settle in a crate in the hall. (The hall also overlooks part of the carpark.)

- What level is this aimed at? This workshop is suitable for everyone from those who have never competed, right up to those competing at advanced level.
